The Australian 4wd Academy conduct Nationally Recognised Training Courses. As a Registered Training Organisation, Michael McCulkin is Director of Training. Michael was a member of the NSW Police for 20 years, and an instructor with the Police Driver Training School for eight years.

After moving to Broken Hill and establishing Tri State Safaris as a leading 4wd tour company, Michael recognised the need for driver training in western NSW and became a Registered Training Organisation to cater for the training needs of private individuals, government departments and other organisations. Our list of clients is very extensive.

We conduct Nationally Recognised Training Courses for the following:

SRODRV001B - Drive & Recover A 4wd Vehicle
SRODRV002B - Drive a 4wd vehicle in Difficult Terrain Using Advanced Techniques
SRODRV003B - Coordinate A Recovery Of A 4wd Vehicle Using Advanced Techniques
RTE2398A – Operate Ride On vehicle (ATV)

Michael is also a licensed RTA motor cycle instructor. We offer motor cycle training courses for pre-learners and those wanting to brush up on their riding skills. Our instructors have a Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training. Our training is based on accredited training packages and on many years of practical four wheel drive experience and 15 years of conducting outback tours.

4 Wheel Drive Courses

Level 1 & 2 Course (Basic) covers the following two units from the Certificate III from the Outdoor Recreation Industry Training Package SRO03.

SRODRV001B - Drive & Recover A 4wd Vehicle
SRODRV002B - Drive a 4wd vehicle in Difficult Terrain Using Advanced Techniques

These courses are designed for the recreational 4WDriver or the professional driver who is required to drive a 4WD as part of their employment. We guarantee that on successful completion of one of our training courses you will have:

  • a greater understanding of how a 4WD works

  • an increased awareness of hazard perception when driving both in urban and rural areas

  • skills for negotiating obstacles when driving off-road

  • a higher level of confidence for driving in difficult terrain

  • the ability to problem solve in difficult situations

  • an enhanced level of skills for driving in difficult terrain

  • the skills required to recover a bogged vehicle

  • nationally recognised qualifications

Our training sessions are limited to a maximum of eight participants to ensure each driver gets the maximum amount of 'hands on' experience. Subjects covered during the course include:-

  • 4WD system review

  • Choosing the correct gear for each situation

  • Carrying out a routine vehicle safety check

  • Steep hill ascents & descents

  • Stall recovery technique

  • Negotiating rocky trails

  • Water crossings

  • Driving in sand

  • Mud driving

  • Vehicle recovery with snatch straps and winches

  • Minimising environmental impact

  • Hazard avoidance

  • Reversing through obstacles

  • Changing a tyre

Course duration is 2 days :  Cost $365pp


Level 3 Course (Advanced) covers the following unit from the Certificate III from the Outdoor Recreation Industry Training Package SRO03.

SRODRV003B : Coordinate A Recovery Of A 4wd Vehicle Using Advanced Techniques

This 1 day course has been designed for participants who have already completed Level 1 (or the equivalent). An emphasis is placed on working in a safe environment when operating recovery equipment. Participants will get intensive 'hands on' experience in the correct and safe techniques used to recover a stranded 4WD vehicle.

Elements covered in this course include:

  • Using a power winch

  • Safely using a vehicle jack

  • Equipment maintenance

  • Using a hi-lift jack

  • Recovery using a snatch strap

  • Using an air jack

  • Using a hand winch

  • Using auxiliary gear such as tree protectors, snatch blocks, extension straps and shackles.

This course is limited to small groups only. Costs and dates are available on request.


All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Courses

RTE2308A – Operate Ride On Vehicle (ATV) from the Rural Production Training Package RTE03

We offer a one day course to improve the safety of ATV riders. Participants receive a Statement of Attainment on successful completion of the unit RTE2308A, from the Rural Production Training Package RTE03 (Certificate III)

ATV’s are now commonly used in the rural workplace and recent research conducted by the National Health and Safety Commission identified that using ATVs was a significant cause of farm related injuries and deaths.

Our ATV Course covers the following:

  • OH&S issues

  • Wearing suitable protective gear

  • Pre-start checks

  • Operation of controls

  • Hazards associated with ATV misuse

  • Using the gears, including high and low range

  • Starting and stopping

  • Turning, gradual and quick

  • Riding strategies

  • Riding over obstacles

  • Riding in difficult terrain

  • Riding up hills, down hills and across hills

  • Towing

  • Carrying loads

  • Environmental issues

Course duration - 1 day  :  Cost $275pp
