Tri State Safaris - Editorials

Here is what some independent travel writers had to say about Tri State Safaris:

Sydney Weekender Magazine - Mike Whitney, Winter 2005 edition

Winter is the best time to see the Outback, and in NSW you can’t get much further outback than Corner Country and the best way to see this corner of the country is on tour with Tri State Safaris. The bloke who runs the show is Mick McCulkin – former NSW Police Sergeant and a man with a huge passion and knowledge of the Outback. The area was his territory, so he knows it like the back of his hand and will definitely get you off the beaten track in safety and comfot.

You’ll need a least a 4 day weekend because this is the Outback and it’s a long time between drinks. But if you’re hungry to see some awesome country you’ll be well satisfied. The desert is an amazing place and it changes everywhere you go – sand dunes, gibber country, carpets of wildflowers as well as endless numbers of kangaroos, emus and native birds.”

Outback Magazine - Sam Leader

Michael McCulkin of Tri State Safaris is one of a handful of trained guides with permission to take groups to the (Mutawintji National) Park’s Aboriginal rock engravings and hand paintings. At the outset of the tour, he shares the Dreamtime story relating to the creation of the landscape.

On the walk to the rock art, Michael points out an array of bush tucker, including native spinach and curry bush, that the untrained eye would miss. Michael’s commentary reflects a depth of passion for Mutawintji, which enables tour groups to appreciate this unique, ancient land.

Holidays Away Magazine - 2005 Winter Edition

Access to these regions (Mutawintji National Park and White Cliffs) can involve access via dirt roads and 4 wheel driving which in some cases can be a daunting experience.

This is where you need the experts and Tri State Safaris are just what you’re looking for. Established for over 13 years, they combine safety with an adventure of a lifetime. The professional, friendly and informative guides take care of everything and being based in the outback, they know it’s people and history extremely well.

Barrier Miner Magazine - Special Edition 2006

Award winning safari tour operators, Mick and Jo McCulkin agree that to become a good outback tour guide you need to know a fair bit about the bush, but more importantly you need personality.

So with individual pasts as colourful as the landscape they work in, it is little wonder the passionate pair continue to grow their Broken Hill based business. (Also see PDF attachment)

The Sun Herald - Travel Section – Terry Smyth

Stepping onto the railway platform I met Mick and Jo McCullkin, a husband and wife team who operate Tri State Safaris as near as a few clicks out of town and as far away as the Birdsville Track. I soon discovered that hitting the road with Mick and Jo wasn’t like touring with guides, but travelling with friends.

Dodging bulldust along red rutted roads, Mick and Jo took me to places where the only shade is the shade you make yourself; where willy-willies whirl like spiteful spirits; where mirages look for all the world like an island sea; where roos, emus razorbacks and camels are the only traffic; where, at night on a high place Jo called ’50 million star accommodation’ you can see the curvature of the earth.
