editorials about Tri State Safaris Tri State Safaris is based in Broken Hill in western New South Wales. The company is owned and operated by Michael and Joanne McCulkin who are licensed tour operators. Tri State has been a successful tour company for the last 15 years and is the only business in Broken Hill to have achieved the status of Nationally Accredited Tourism Business. We have made a commitment to ecologically sustainable tourism, and we encourage our customers to experience natural areas to gain a better understanding of the environment, European and Aboriginal culture and to better appreciate the need for conservation. Some of our tours are now identified as having Advanced Eco-Certification. Our guides are friendly and knowledgeable, and love sharing their passion for the outback with you. Some of our guides are Aboriginal and they will ensure your visit to areas of cultural significance will be an experience that will remain with you for a long time. Touring Outback Australia has given us the opportunity to test a wide range of equipment, and to see what stands up to the harshest of conditions. If you are after advice on selecting gear such as 12v fridges, recovery kits, suspension or camping equipment we are happy to tell you what gear we use and trust. The idea for the tour company came about when Michael was a Police Sergeant with a patrol area covering some 180,000 square kilometres of outback NSW. Travellers often asked him questions about the area, and so becoming a tour guide was a natural progression. Michael has formal qualifications in a number of areas including workplace training, driver training, emergency management and search & rescue. These skills, combined with many years of experience in outback patrolling, provided an ideal platform for the tour company. Joanne has lived in the Northern Territory for much of her adult life, including a number of years on an Aboriginal community in the Tanami Desert. Joanne has developed a depth of experience and knowledge about the outback and has a special affinity with the Central Desert areas of Australia. Tri State Safaris is a Registered Training Organisation and conducts nationally accredited driver/rider training. We offer motor cycle training and defensive driver training courses as well as Four Wheel Drive and All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) courses. Michael is a former NSW Police Driving Instructor and brings this experience to clients.
