Day 1: Depart Broken Hill 8.30am and travel north
towards the historic township of Milparinka, virtually a
ghost town that was once the centre of a thriving gold
mining settlement. After a visit to Depot Glen &
Sturt's Cairn we head north to Mt Wood in Sturt National
Park for our overnight stay in the historic homestead. (L,D) Day 2:
This morning we head through the remote back country of
Sturt National Park to Cameron Corner where the three
states meet. Here we also have the opportunity to have a
good look at the famous Dingo Fence and check out the
Corner Post. Leaving Cameron Corner, we follow in the
footsteps of Captain Starlight as we head out across the
sand dunes of the desert and travel along the Strezlecki
Track to Innamincka, arriving mid afternoon. After
settling into our accommodation for the next 3 nights we
take the time to check out the Cooper Creek and the
township. This area is an oasis in the outback and a
birdlife haven. (LB,L,D)
Day 3: Today's destination is the recently
named Coongie Lakes National Park. This shallow lakes
system is feed by the Cooper and is home to a diverse
range of water birds. (LB,L,D)
Day 4: Today is a chance to see places made
famous by the ill-fated Burke & Wills expedition. We
visit the Dig Tree, where the explorers exhausted and
near death, dug up supplies before continuing in search
of rescue Burke's grave, Cullyamurra waterhole and more.
(LB,L,D)
Day 5: From Innamincka we head further east,
travelling through outback stations such as Orientos on
our way back to NSW via Warri Gate. Our overnight
stay is at Tibooburra, the most remote town in NSW.
There will be plnty of time to soak up the atmosphere of
this fascinating town and to chat with the locals.
Overnight accommodation is in the cabins at the Family
Hotel. (LB,L,D)
Day 6: This morning we continue to explore the
highlights of Tibooburra, including Golden Gully, the
Museum, NPWS Interpretive Centre and much more before
heading back towards Broken Hill for tours end.
Depending on time and weather conditions, we may be able
to travel through some of the properties north of Broken
Hill, coming back via Silverton rather than the main
road. (LB,L) |
