1 Day Mutawintji National Park Tour
“You provided a knowledgeable and
passionate guide for Mutawintji – helping us to understand the
Aboriginal culture. Jo and Mick’s safari made us feel relaxed and
cared for with an extra special style and flair, we loved the four
wheel driving. Our memories of this trip will stand in the forefront
– and we'll toast to that.”
Brent & Leslie, Wisconsin, USA
“We appreciated the very individualised and
thoughtful service, the detailed and very interesting information,
the sensitivity you displayed for the ecosystems you were sharing

Mutawintji NP is situated 130km from
Broken Hill, amid the rugged Bynguano Ranges,
with its' beautiful gorges and creeks lined with majestic River Red
Gums.
Mutawintji is an area of great historical significance. It is an
Aboriginal name which means "place of green grass and waterholes".
The presence of shelter and water means this idyllic place is home
to a wide variety of birds and wildlife.
Among the gorges and cliffs are the secrets of an ancient culture.
The Park reveals examples of rock carvings, paintings and stencils
that provide evidence of aboriginal occupation of the area that
dates back more than 8000 years.
In September 1998 Mootwingee NP was formally handed back to its'
traditional owners. Today the area is called by its' traditional
name, Mutawintji. Mutawintji was the first National Park in New South Wales to be handed back to
it’s traditional owners.
On our tour we start the day with pick up from your accommodation.
The drive from Broken Hill takes in ever changing landscapes that
include the Barrier Ranges, saltbush and bluebush plains as far as
the eye can see, mulga and red sand country.
Morning tea along the way is enjoyed in the shade of a dry creek bed
lined with majestic red gums. A little further on we enter
Mutawintji NP and proceed to the Historic Site. Our guides have been
accredited by the traditional owners to conduct tours in the
restricted access Historic Site - some of our guides are Aboriginal,
which further adds to this unique cultural experience.
This area is where ceremonies and initiations took place. At the
Cultural Centre we listen to the audio visual story of Kullawarra,
and learn about the creation of Mutawintji in the dreamtime. We then
embark on interpretive bush walks to both the rock engravings and
the galleries of hand stencils, which are reminders of centuries of
Aboriginal occupation of the area. Abundant wildlife and
relics of early European settlement are a feature of the area.
The remnants of ancient fire places and stone tool making gives us
an insight into the traditional way of life for generations of
Aboriginal people.
The bush walks are easy to moderate. Our departure time is usually
8.30am, but in the hotter months of November through to February, we
may start earlier to avoid walking in the midday heat.
Tours Include: Home made morning tea and
picnic lunch
included.

Departures: Tours depart daily on demand for a
