Day 1:
Tuesday 7 July (L,D) Depart
Cairns and head west over the Great Dividing Range to
Mareeba, then via Palmer River to Laura. Our
overnight stay is at Jowalbinna, epicentre of "Quinkan"
Aboriginal rock art, one of the world's top ten rock art
sites. An easy start to our tour with overnight
accommodation in Safari Tents, if available. (approx
342kms)
Day 2:
Wednesday 8 July (B,L,D) -
Start the day with a guided tour into the sandstone
escarpments where we explore ancient rock art depicting
life and customs of the original inhabitants. After
lunch we travel via Hann River Roadhouse to Mary Valley
cattle station for overnight camp. (approx 120kms)
Day 3: Thursday
9 July (B,L,D) Leaving Mary
Valley we travel to historic Musgrave Telegraph Station.
On to Merluna Station, a family owned cattle property,
visiting Coen and the Archer River along the way.
We camp at Merluna Station tonight. (approx 325kms)
Day 4: Friday
10 July
(B,D) On to Weipa for a quick look around,
then lunch at your leisure followed by some restocking
of supplies. After lunch, travel via Batavia Downs to
our overnight camp at Moreton Telegraph Office on the
Wenlock River. (approx 254kms)
Day 5:
Saturday 11 July (B,L,D)
Moreton to Bramwell Junction is where the 4wd action,
adventure and fun really begins as we are now on the Old
Telegraph Road. Travel through landscapes of huge
termite mounds, prehistoric cycads and carnivorous
plants. Lunch stop and swim at Fruit Bat falls then onto
the absolute jewel of the peninsula - Elliot
(Twin/Indian Head) Falls for overnight camp. (approx
132kms)
Day 6:
Sunday 12 July (B,L,D) This
morning there's more time to swim in the pristine
spring-fed pools, landscaped by nature. We then continue
along the Old Telegraph Track and across the mighty
Jardine River (conditions permitting). Onto Barmega and
finally our camp for three balmy nights on the tropical
shores of the Torres Strait. (approx 99kms)
Day 7:
Monday 13 July (B,L,D)
Today is a very special day as we travel the short
distance to the tip - Pajinka. Celebrations as we take
the emotional walk to the very top of Australia. We also
explore the ruins of historic Somersby, the Lockerbie
scrub and the Albany Passage before returning to our
base camp. (approx 68kms)
Day 8:
Tuesday 14 July (B,L,D) A
tropical cruise to Thursday and Horn Islands in the
Torres Straight is today's highlight. These islands are
culturally diverse and an experience not to be missed!
This cruise is included in the tour, but if you would
prefer to spend the day relaxing on the beach at base
camp, the choice is yours.
Day 9:
Wednesday 15 July (B,L,D)
Heading south from our base camp we ferry the Jardine
River then travel through more of Cape York's unique
wilderness in the Heathlands Reserve on the way to our
overnight camp at Bramwell Station, where we'll enjoy
some genuine bush hospitality. (approx 223kms)
Day 10:
Thursday 16 July: (B,L,D)
Today we continue down the Telegraph Road, then head
east on the rugged Frenchman's track crossing the
Wenlock and Pascoe Rivers (conditions permitting) on our
way to the fabulous Iron Range National Park,
Australia's largest remaining area of tropical lowland
rainforest, renowned for its abundant bird and wildlife.
Our overnight camp is at Chili Beach on the shores of
the Coral Sea. (approx 152kms)
Day 11:
Friday 17 July (B,L,D)
Today we visit the tiny outposts of Portland Roads,
Lockhart River aboriginal community, and then travel
south back to the Peninsula Development Road via Tozers
Gap and Batavia Goldfields. Tonight's camp is at Archer
River. (approx 170kms)
Day 12:
Saturday 18 July (B,L,D)
Our destination today is the vast expanses of Lakefield
National Park with its prolific wildlife and unusual
landscapes. Our overnight camp in the park will be
either near Hann River or Kalpower Crossing. (approx
256kms)
Day 13:
Sunday 19 July (B,L,D)
Explore the more of the Lakefield's 1.6 million acres on
our way to Cooktown via Old Laura. As we are nearing the
end of our journey we have a special treat with an
overnight stay at the beautiful Mungumby Lodge, a
private wilderness retreat situated on the northern edge
of the majestic million hectare Australian Tropical
Rainforest National park (Greater Daintree). No camping
tonight, rather we stay in spacious wooden bungalows
with ensuite bathrooms and private patios, and a great
dinner in the restaurant to top of the evening! (approx
229kms)
Day 14:
Monday 20 July (B,L,D) A
leisurely start before we continue our travels south,
visiting the Lion's Den Hotel, eerie Black Mountain,
Wujal Wujal and the Bloomfield River. Our last night of
camping is at Cape Tribulation. (approx 110kms)
Day 15:
Tuesday 21 July (B,L) On
our last day together we continue to explore the World
Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest. We cross the
Daintree River by cable ferry and continue on to
Daintree, Mosman and finally Cairns for trips end.
